"Nurturing the Inner Healer"

Workshop for Healthcare Professionals

While “Nurturing the Inner Spirit” addresses burnout in musicians, this program, “Nurturing the Inner Healer” is focused on the major issue of burnout in the healthcare professions. Uniquely, this program harnesses the powerful capacity of music to reduce stress, foster connection and wellbeing, and expand creativity by having live musicians play throughout the program. Incorporating the humanities into the medical education and training is an emerging field of interest in medicine, and music has a singular role to play in this process.

This workshop includes both didactic and experiential components. These tools come from the fields of Mindfulness, Emotional Intelligence, Positive Psychology and Career/Leadership Coaching. The musicians will play at regular intervals throughout the program, with the music being carefully chosen to mesh with the objectives of each module, providing the participants an opportunity to appreciate the ways in which music can be used as a powerful tool in addressing personal self-care and healing. In addition, it may also be seen as a way to potentially enhance the inner art of medicine, which includes the skills of mindfulness and presence; empathy and compassion; joy and connection; listening and communication; and inspiration and creativity. As a supplement to this program, participants will be provided with a musical repertoire and other resources that can help healthcare professionals grow music as a personal and professional inspiration and support.

The general outline of the program is as follows:

  • Diminuendo: Balance and Compassion (Turn down the Volume and Restore Harmony). Learn specific mindfulness strategies that can be used to reduce stress and bring relaxation to the mind and body.

  • Giocoso: (Nurture Joy and Connection) Learn strategies that help you overcome the default negativity bias of the brain.

  • Vivace: (Cultivate Emotional Balance). Learn specific tools that help build emotional balance, which enhances both well-being and relationships with others.

  • Legato: Listen. Listen. Listen. Learn how to mindfully and actively listen, so that communication and difficult conversations can be better managed.

  • Inspiration and Creativity. Learn skills that enhance the ability to bring inspiration and creativity to challenging situations.
